I’ve written about the fact that I’ve started eating more calories here  and here. After my weight stayed stable for a while, I continued to eat about 1900-2000 calories most days. I’ve been wildly excited with every side effect of eating more food from not being cold all of the time, to having periods that are […]

UPDATE: It Isn’t Always About the Number On the Scale

May 13, 2013 | Comments: 3 Comments

Back in January I posted about the disordered eating habits I developed after an injury.  The short of it is, I became totally obsessed with losing fat and eating only what I perceived to be “healthy” foods based on reading too much. Today I thought I’d give you an update on how that has gone for me.   I’m […]

…but  just for three weeks, so that’s totally okay, right? NO. Bob Harper of The Biggest Loser went on the Today Show yesterday morning touting his new book “Jumpstart to Skinny”.  He advocates an 800 calorie diet for women and a 1200 calorie diet for men and says that you can lose up to 20 pounds […]

Weight Loss Isn’t Always About Eating Less and Exercising More

This is the longest blog post I have ever written, but it’s important. Everybody screws up once in a while and sometimes it takes a while to realize there was a screw up. It took me almost four years to realize that I was making the same mistake every day. Every freaking day. I was […]

This meal diary from a nutrition “expert” might be one of the worst I have ever seen. 5.3 oz Oikos = 120 cal Banana  = 100 cal Trader Joe’s Middle Eastern Salad, 8oz   = 310 cal Dark Chocolate Caramel Wedge  = 30 cal Whole Wheat Sandwich Think (probably Oroweat)  =  100 cal Laughing Cow […]

I can almost guarantee you, if you are only eating 1200 calories per day, you aren’t eating enough.  You may lose weight for a while, but you will plateau.  Here is a great calculator to use to figure out how much to eat Accurate Calorie Calculator.  Choose the Katch-Mcardle equation on Step 8.  This one […]

Roasted Cauliflower

I prefer roasted cauliflower. In fact, it’s the only way I like it. Cut into florets, spread on cookie sheet or jellyroll pan, sprinkle with sea salt and bake at 450°F until the edges turn brown, about 30 minutes. Tastes like popcorn!         Related posts: Recipe: Quinoa Egg Bake What’s for Dinner: […]

Powdered Protein Supplements: How can you tell which brands are safe?

September 6, 2012 | Comments: 2 Comments

Categories: Nutrition, Science

The unfortunate answer is there is no way to tell. Consumer Labs (CL) and the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) are the most widely respected testing bodies for consumer products; however, CL does not test every year and when they do, they do not test every brand. USP has a voluntary program in which companies […]

I was served these vegetarian burgers while attending class at the Duke School of Integrative Medicine. They are fantastic! The class loved these so much, we asked for the recipe and it was kindly provided by the school’s head chef, Cate Smith. I hope you like them as much as I do! The nutrition information […]

We are so rushed in the morning that it can be difficult to come up with quick, healthy breakfasts to eat as we run out the door. This quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) egg bake is great to make on a Sunday night then reheat in the microwave for the rest of the week. The quinoa in […]
